RICHMOND, VA — Delegates Mark Keam (D-35) and Jim LeMunyon (R-67) praised today on the Floor of the Virginia House the accomplishments of the Oakton High School Girls Varsity Swim and Dive Team who recently won the statewide AAA Virginia High School League Championship for this year.
The outstanding athletes from Oakton were in the Gallery of the House of Delegates when the legislature unanimously adopted House Joint Resolution 527, which commends the team for their championship win. HJR 527 was introduced by Delegates Keam and LeMunyon, along with Delegates David Bulova (D-34) and Tom Rust (R-86) who also represent constituents who attend Oakton High School.
During his floor speech — and while wearing a burgundy and gold tie — Delegate Keam recognized the great Cougar athletes and their coaches. In particular, Delegate Keam applauded the swim team's Head Coach Parker Ramsdell and Oakton sophomore Janet Hu, who led the team and also came in first place in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke events that broke state records by 1.58 and 1.4 seconds respectively.
"The entire General Assembly is proud of the athletic and academic accomplishments of Oakton High School, and we wanted to recognize this special occasion with a Joint Resolution adopted by the House and Senate," said Keam. "As the Delegate who lives down the street from Oakton High, I am honored to represent these incredible young Virginians who will lead our Commonwealth for years to come."
Delegate LeMunyon, who also spoke on the House Floor, recognized the achievements of Oakton High's Boys Swim and Dive Team that also did very well this year, coming in second place at the state level. The Boys Team placed at the AAA Concord District High School Swim and Dive Competition and the AAA Northern Region Championships.
Delegate LeMunyon also announced to the House of Delegates that the Oakton Girls' Varsity Basketball Team is in Richmond today to compete in the AAA Virginia High School League semifinals at a game scheduled at the Virginia Commonwealth University Seigel Center. If the team wins tonight, they will play for the state championship this Friday.
Delegate Mark Keam (www.DelegateKeam.org,@MarkKeam) represents Virginia's 35th District, located in Fairfax County. The House District includes Tysons Corner, the Town of Vienna, Dunn Loring and portions of Oakton and Fairfax. Currently serving in his second term, Delegate Keam is a member of the House Education and Finance committees.
