Halfway through the week-long walk/bike challenge undertaken by three local elementary schools, more than 1,300 students had been counted walking or biking to school, according to numbers reported by parent volunteers today.

All schools had their highest total number of bikers and walkers yet.

Vienna Elementary School typically has 82 students in the VES designated walking area, according to a travel plan the school created this fall. Of those, 44 walk or bike regularly. But this morning, that number was nearly tripled with 121 students walking or biking to school.

Cunningham Park Elementary School doubled the number of bikers it had participating from yesterday to today. And at Wolftrap Elementary School, Del. Mark Keam joined a walking train that boasted 183 students.
