Bridge connecting Vienna and Falls Church reopens Friday morning six months after project began

By Andre L. Taylor March 18, 2011

After six months the Idylwood Road bridge, connecting communities in Vienna and Falls Church , has reopened.

Fairfax County Supervisor Linda Smyth was the first to drive over the bridge just after the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning at the base of the bridge.

"It has been a major project for the neighborhoods," said Smyth, who represents the county's Providence District.

The $2 million project started in August and opened Friday morning, said Jeff Wagner, spokesman for Fluor-Lane, LLC, the construction company that built the bridge. Steven Titunik, a spokesman or Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said the project could have taken two years.

Del. Mark L. Keam (D-35th District) said the speedy completion of the project makes him happy about other projects going on in the commonwealth. He said he hopes to see other projects follow suit and get completed in record time.

"Enough people in these communities were willing to make the six-month sacrifice," Keam said. "And six-months later it's done."

Vienna Patch will have a full story about the reopening tomorrow.

This story has been corrected to reflect the total cost of the bridge as $2 million.
