The TrailMix, which takes place up and down the 45-mile long Washington and Old Dominion Trail, will be the largest community event sponsored by Dominion Power in the Northern Virginia area.

It kicks off early Saturday morning with the hail to the trail cleanup effort -- volunteers in 8 different locations along the 45-mile long park will perform the largest single beautifying effort the park has ever seen.

Delegate Mark Keam of Vienna, says this won't be your run of the mill beautification effort, since we're talking about a park that spans through three counties.

"It's not like everybody's showing up to a park and everybody's showing up to a park and leaving -- this involves multi jurisdictions and lots and lots of different volunteer organizations," Keam says.

The Greater Washington Sports Alliance, which is organizing the event -- expects a total of 5000 people over the course of the day.

Through donations and registrations for the walk-run-and-bike event later in the day, the Trailmix also helps raise money for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's Nature Nuts program.

Park Authority director Paul Gilbert says the program is all about getting more children outside.

"About 85,000 kids a year currently have a meaningful outdoor experience through our parks," Gilbert says.

Gilbert hopes money raised during the TrailMix will help increase that number to 100,000 children each year.
