This morning, my family spent a few hours delivering turkeys and trimmings to some of our neighbors who are less fortunate than we are. These families and individuals suffer from serious illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, and other life-threatening challenges, while facing economic troubles that won't allow them to be self-sufficient.
We joined hundreds of other volunteers at Food & Friends in Washington DCÂ who prepared the food and made home deliveries throughout Virginia, Maryland and DC.
By seeing the poverty and illness in our community with their own eyes, my children (who are nine and seven) have found a new sense of appreciation for what they have. We are truly blessed to be living in Fairfax County with nice homes and great schools. We should never take any of these assets for granted, and each of us should look for ways to improve the lives of everyone in our community.
On this Thanksgiving, I thank God for all the blessings He has provided to me and my family, and also thank the thousands of unsung heroes in our community -- the volunteers and social workers -- who make our community a loving place for everyone.
Hope you and your loved ones enjoy a special season of Thanks this year.
